Referendum – Tunisia: Several Shortcomings in the Polling Stations Noted by the Atide Association

The Tunisian Association for the Integrity and Democracy of Elections (Atide) reported, this Monday, July 25, 2022, the day of the referendum – relating to the draft constitution proposed by President Kaïs Saïed – several shortcomings in the polling stations, during a press briefing.

The association noted, in particular, a delay of 10 to 26 minutes in the start of voting operations in certain voting centers in Béja, Jendouba, Bizerte, Ben Arous, Kébili, and Manouba, in addition to a lack of equipment in approximately 26% of centers observed.

Sabrine Ghazouani, deputy secretary general of the association, reported the absence of signals in some voting centers in Mahdia, the failure to display voter lists in voting centers in El Hamma and El Manara (governorate of Gabes), as well as the lack of training of members of the Independent High Authority for Elections (Isie) in Gabès and Béja.

Atide also noted an offense relating to voter influence. indeed, a voting booth was discovered at the Ennour voting center in Jendouba, she continued.

The president of the association, Bassam Maâtar, for his part, informed the observers that the 436 observers of Atide (430 in Tunisia and 6 abroad) were prevented from circulating freely in the polling centers.
