ALGIERS-President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika sent a message of congratulations to Antonio Manuel de Oliveira Guterres following his appointment as Secretary of the United Nations Organization (UN), in which he underscored Algeria’s commitment and willingness to “jointly and severally” working with the UN to “stand by” the principles of its Chart. ย
“I seize the opportunity of your brilliant election as Secretary General of the United Nations to offer you, on my own behalf and on behalf of the Algerian government and people, my warm congratulations and my best wishes for success in the noble mission the international community has just assigned you,” President Bouteflika wrote in his message.
“Your political and professional career, both nationally and internationally, as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a body to which you gave an unparalleled dimension, earned you this major responsibility whose noblesse and strong message resisted, since the creation of the UN, to all events that threatened the integrity and sacredness of the main referential values of our Organization, which focus on the preservation of international peace and security and the promotion of international cooperation to achieve development under respect for equality between nations and human rights,” the Head of State stressed.
“Your experience as unifier throughout your long and rich career, combined with your commitments to the overhaul of the UN to move towards more democracy and further efficiency, your faith in universality of the principles and ideals the Organization naturally and legitimately protects, augur promising prospects to defend the interests of all peoples, notably the most deprived ones, to achieve a shared prosperity through strengthening the role of the UN as designer and articulator of international cooperation for development,” he recalled.
“Acting as an active member of the great family of the UN, Algeria, faithful to its history and convictions, has always contributed, in cooperation of the UN system, to the promotion of the ideals of peace and peaceful relations between States and nations through a sustained and multifaceted action in favour of prevention and resolution of conflicts, the fight against all forms of transnational terrorism and criminality, solidarity with the friendly countries suffering from historical injustices, poverty, pandemics and the new threats induced by the current world disorder,” the Head of State wrote in his message.
“I seize this opportunity to underscore my country’s commitment and willingness to jointly and severally working with you to stand by the principles of the UN Chart, which benefit from the support of the international community, and daily challenge us to neutralize imbalances in international events and avoid aggravating them,” he said.
