Selected at the Cannes Film Festival, Elias Belkeddar’s first feature film promises two colorful characters.

On the notes of “Ya Zina”, the first images of Omar the strawberry reveal Reda Kateb and Benoît Magimel to us as partners in crime under the burning sun of Algeria. The first is an exiled and depressed thug, the second is his rather optimistic accomplishment. Accompanied by Meriem Amiar, the existential wandering of the two men intends to put them to the test, between boredom and frustration. ” Why do we call him Omar the strawberry? Because he operates on the dentist,” exclaims Magimel in the trailer.

“Omar, better known as Omar the Strawberry, is an old-fashioned bandit. Forced on the run in Algeria, he saw small shenanigans, accompanied by his illustrious sidekick Roger. After having reigned over the middle of banditry French for decades, they must together accept their new life when they have lived so far only in debauchery and violence,” reveals the synopsis.

In the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival, this first feature film by Elias Belkeddar — co-screenwriter of Athena by Romain Gavras — will be presented at the Séance de Minuit on the Croisette. Omar the strawberry is to be discovered at the cinema on May 24th.
