Speaking at the Sheraton Hotels in Ikeja, Bennick revealed that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is likely to withdraw the right to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations from Guinea.

“We are putting together an application to co-organize the tournament with the Republic of Benin. The Minister of Youth and Sports has given his approval for the candidacy.

“It is time for Nigeria to host an international tournament as there are many benefits associated with hosting such competitions,” he said.

NFF added; “Many countries are candidates for the competition, but we are confident to obtain the approval of CAF.

“We are working with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to ensure that Nigeria receives the right accommodation,” Bennick pointed out.

Nigeria first hosted and won the 1980 Nations Cup led by Brazilian coach Otto Gloria.

The Green Eagles, as they were then known, beat Algeria 3-0 in the final and then lost to the same Desert Foxes 1-0. After ten years in Algiers

The second time Nigeria hosted the prestigious competition was in 2000 when it was co-hosted by its West African neighbor Ghana; This is the first ever Africa Cup of Nations held in two countries.
