The royal court declared that “Morocco’s position on the Palestinian issue is irreversible and constitutes a foreign policy priority”, following the PJD’s “denunciation” of the Foreign Minister’s remarks on relations with Israel

The Moroccan Royal Court on Monday criticized a recent statement issued by the opposition Justice and Development Party (PJD) regarding relations between the Moroccan Kingdom and Israel, stressing that it stated ” irresponsible overtaking and dangerous approximations”.

This was revealed in a press release from the Royal Court, made public by the official Al-Maghrib agency, commenting on another press release issued by the PJD on March 9, in which the Moroccan party “denounced” the previous statements by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita regarding relations with Israel.

According to the Moroccan Royal Court, “The General Secretariat of the Justice and Development Party recently issued a statement containing irresponsible overstepping and dangerous approximations, regarding relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the State of Israel, and link with the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian territory”.

“Morocco’s position on the Palestinian question is irreversible, and it constitutes one of the priorities of the foreign policy of His Majesty the King (Mohammed VI) […] Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee (of the Organization for Islamic), which places it at the same level of the territorial integrity of the kingdom”, added the press release of the Royal Court.

According to the same source, Morocco’s position on the Palestinian question is a constant position of principle of Morocco, which cannot be subject to political one-upmanship and narrow electoral campaigns.

“The foreign policy of the kingdom is a prerogative of His Majesty the King […], by virtue of the Constitution, which the Sovereign exercises in accordance with the national constants and the supreme interests of the party, and at their head the question of the integrity territory”, recalled the same press release.

The Moroccan Royal Court also affirmed that “The kingdom’s international relations cannot be blackmailed by anyone and for any consideration whatsoever, particularly in this complex global context”.

And to add that “the instrumentalization of the foreign policy of the kingdom in an internal partisan agenda constitutes a dangerous and unacceptable precedent”.

“The resumption of relations between Morocco and Israel was carried out in circumstances and in a context that everyone knows,” explained the Royal Court.

On March 9, the General Secretariat of the Justice and Development Party published a press release in which “it deplores the recent positions taken by the Moroccan Minister for Foreign Affairs, who seems to be defending the Zionist entity in certain African and European meetings , at a time when the Israeli occupation continues its criminal aggression against the Palestinians.”

So far, there has been no immediate comment from the PJD on the Royal Court’s statement.

The publication of press releases by the Royal Court against political parties in Morocco is considered rare, since the last similar position dates back to 2015, against the party of progress and socialism, concerning internal political issues. .

On December 10, 2020, Israel and Morocco announced the resumption of diplomatic relations, after their suspension in the year 2000.

On December 22, the Moroccan government signed a “joint declaration” between Morocco, Israel and the United States, during the first visit of an official Israeli-American delegation to the capital Rabat.

Morocco has thus become the fourth Arab country to accept a normalization of relations with Israel, during the year 2020, after the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan.
