Morocco: The Production of Autumn Cereals Amounts to 1 Million Quintals

The production of autumn cereals for the 2022-2023 agricultural campaign amounted to 1.1 million quintals, made up of appropriate varieties with high yields and guaranteed quality, and subsidized by the State to the tune of a third of the cost of production, said Monday the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Waters and Forests, Mohammed Sadiki. 

For sugar beet, the targeted area is 50,000 hectares, the minister said during the session of oral questions in the House of Representatives, stressing that the aid for sugar beet seeds is 1,280 dirhams/ hectare. With regard to fertilizers, the Minister specified that the national market will be supplied with nearly 650,000 tons of phosphate fertilizers, with price stability compared to last year’s level, noting that the ministry is closely monitoring the evolution of nitrogen fertilizer prices which are experiencing some decline internationally, in addition to examining a formula for State intervention in certain central chains of these fertilizers for the supply of the national market. Regarding animal production, the ministry continues to support fodder according to production chains and the climatic situation, according to Sadiki, who expressed support for dairy and red meat chains to preserve their balance, the protection of animal health at free title against contagious diseases, as well as the expansion of water points dedicated to livestock watering depending on the region. In this sense, he noted that new aid will be granted to young people and for the development of collective land, within the framework of the creation of an agricultural middle class, the revision of aid according to the contracts of the development programs of the chains of production. On the other hand, Sadiki specified that 1,300,000 hectares have been developed under the program of autumn crops, of which 11% are irrigated, as well as 222,000 hectares of autumn crops, and the launch of the program relating to autumn cereals over an area of ​​50,000 hectares.

For sugar crops, the minister said that 15,000 hectares have been sown, out of 50,000 hectares targeted, while the area dedicated to vegetable crops is 41,000 hectares, out of 103,000 hectares targeted.
