At the end of last January, Morocco imported a volume of 805,000 tons of wheat, double compared to a year earlier, due to the low national production.

More specifically, the bill for wheat imports reached around 2.6 billion dirhams, against 901 million dirhams in January last year, indicates the foreign exchange office.

This increase is the result of the increase in grain prices on the international market. The price of a tonne of wheat jumped at the end of January to 3,238 dirhams, against 2,669 dirhams a year ago. This represents an increase of 21.3%, specifying the same source.

In total, the value of imported food products, including wheat and barley, during the first month of the current year amounted to 6.8 billion dirhams, against 4.3 billion dirhams, i.e. an increase of 56.3%.

With regard to energy products, import costs amounted to 7.9 billion dirhams during the same period, against 4.7 billion dirhams a year earlier, representing a growth of almost 67%.

In total, the value of Moroccan imports at the end of January reached 50.9 billion dirhams, against 36.4 billion dirhams in 2021, estimated growth of 39.5, the office said.
