Historian and human rights defender Maati Monjib was arrested in Rabat on Tuesday and remanded in custody in El Arjat prison. The investigating judge who ordered his imprisonment is relying on an investigation by the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) for “money laundering”.

Logic of repression
The 60-year-old activist immediately denounced “defamatory accusations” and that the aim of “these lawsuits is to punish me because of a recent statement on the radio in which I speak of the role of the DGST in the repression of opponents and the management of political and media affairs in Morocco ”. Because this procedure dates back to November 2015, where he is accused, along with six other journalists, of “endangering state security”. Sentences range from one year to five years in prison. This arrest of Maati Monjib is part of a much broader logic of repression targeting journalists, activists and opponents of the regime like that of Omar Radi.
