Morocco Imports Liquefied Gas from Russia and Three Other Countries

Russia is one of the most important sources from which Morocco purchases liquefied gas. And this, alongside three other countries which supply the Kingdom with reasonable quantities of this gas.

Sources at the Ministry of Energy indicated that the Shereef Kingdom imports liquefied gas mainly from Russia. It is regasified in Spain and then pumped into the joint North African-European gas pipeline, which was previously used to export Algerian gas to Spain.

In exclusive statements to the specialized Energy platform (based in Washington), the sources confirmed the validity of its explanations according to which the appearance of Morocco on the list of gas importers from Russia meant liquefied gas and not natural gas.

The sources also confirmed the accuracy of what was published by the energy platform, according to which Spain is responsible for regasifying it and then pumping it again. This is so that Morocco can benefit from it in the operation of the Tahadart and Ain Beni Mutahar Tahadart power plants.

Morocco also imports gas from other countries

The sources indicated that Morocco – in addition to buying liquefied gas from Russia – imports from three other countries, indirectly via Spain. But they did not reveal the names of these countries.

It should be noted that Morocco meets approximately 90% of its gas needs through imports. Since local production only supplies 110 million cubic meters of the total demand of one billion cubic meters per year. The government has therefore met its needs over the last 32 months. And this, after Algeria stopped gas exports to Spain, via the Kingdom’s lands.

The gas infrastructure currently in place in Morocco depends on the gas pipeline extending to Europe, which was previously used to transport Algerian gas. Knowing that the rapprochement with Spain has led to it being exploited for pumping in the opposite direction, from June 29 (2022). Which led to the pumping of natural gas to Rabat.

Although the sources did not reveal the names of the countries from which Morocco imports liquefied gas, the main gas supplier is Spain. This obtains enormous quantities of gas from Algeria in first place, Russia in second place, and Nigeria in third place.

Indeed, Algeria tops exporters to Spain in April 2024, with a percentage of 46.1% and 12.35 terawatt hours. Then, we find 19.9% for Russia with a total of 5.34 terawatt hours of liquefied gas. Finally, Nigeria brings up the rear with a percentage of 10% or 2.68 terawatt hours.
