Morocco: Foreign Direct Investment on the Rise, France in the Lead

France leads Moroccan direct investment abroad (IDME) which reached 13.43 billion dirhams between January and September 2022, an increase of 2% compared to last year.

Despite the poor performance observed at the end of June 2022, the latest statistics from the Foreign Exchange Office indicate that Moroccan direct investment abroad is on an upward trend, standing at 13.43 billion dirhams during of the first nine months of the year, i.e. an increase of 2% (260 million dirhams) compared to the same period of 2021. “As for the net flow of IDMEs, it marks, for the first nine months of the year, a double-digit growth”, an increase of 44.8%, (1.32 billion dirhams), reports Today Le Maroc.

The net flow of IDMEs reached 2.45 billion dirhams during the period, an increase of 431 million dirhams according to the Foreign Exchange Office. France captured 895 million dirhams from this flow in the first six months of the year, i.e. 36.47%, against 1.44 billion dirhams in 2021. The Netherlands followed with a flow of 530 million dirhams against 38 million dirhams in 2021.

In Senegal, the net flow of IDMEs in the first half of the year is around 300 million dirhams, i.e. at the same level as that of 2021. It is about 277 million dirhams in the United Arab Emirates, i.e. a slight increase compared to 2021. “Moroccan investments in Luxembourg have for their part improved significantly, going from a negative balance of −699 million dirhams to a net flow of 194 million dirhams”, indicates the same source. At the same time, Côte d’Ivoire, 2ᵉ last year, finds itself this year in 7ᵉ place.

By sector, financial and insurance activities remain in the lead, followed by real estate activity. “There are also net investments of around 11 million dirhams in specialized, scientific and technical activities and 1 million dirhams in the electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning sector”, underlines we.
