Morocco-Canary Islands: The File of the Delimitation of Maritime Borders Resurfaces

Since the resumption of relations with Spain, Morocco has reiterated its desire to resume negotiations on the delimitation of maritime borders with the Canary Islands.

Speaking on the sidelines of the celebration of Africa Day, organized in Las Palmas, Morocco’s ambassador to Spain, Karima Benyaïch, tried to reassure the Canary Islands on the Atlantic maritime borders that the king wishes to delimit with Spain through dialogue, agreement, and cooperation between the two parties, Spanish media report.

“The delimitation that we carried out was due to the fact that our legal proceedings had already expired”, explained the diplomat, affirming that there will be no problem regarding this file since Morocco and Spain maintain good relationships.

And to specify that during the meeting of April 7 between King Mohammed VI and Pedro Sanchez, it was decided to reactivate the working group in charge of maritime spaces. The ambassador specified that “the interests of the parties will be taken into account” in the negotiation of the median.
