The National Railways Office (ONCF) has announced the gradual acquisition of 100 new locally manufactured trains over the next 10 years.

ONCF intends to increase the rate of coverage of rail services in Morocco to 87% by 2040. This project is part of the strengthening of the company’s fleet which, according to its general manager, Mohamed Rabie Khlie, needs “50 trains to replace depreciated rail units, 25 trains to meet growing demand for passenger transport, and 5 additional trains for maintenance needs”.

The new trains will be delivered in 2025, he said. And to achieve this, the office will launch a call for expressions of interest during the first half of 2023. “The bet for us is to reduce the cost of manufacturing and to move towards a fleet of trains produced locally”, a- he declared.
