Morocco: A Former Deputy among the Major Figures in Drug Trafficking to Algeria

Revelations continue in the affair of “ Pablo Escobar of the Sahara ” which has been shaking Morocco for several weeks. The investigation into the networks of the Moroccan-Malian drug trafficker revealed to investigators the secrets of cannabis trafficking to Algeria. The person behind the network is a political figure, according to the Moroccan press.

Hadj Ahmed Ben Brahim, known as the Malian or the “Pablo Escobar of the Sahara”, is a 47-year-old drug bigwig.

Arrested in Mauritania in 2015 and then in Morocco in 2019, he finally decided, after four years of detention, to drag down his Moroccan accomplices who, according to him, had betrayed him.

His revelations led to the incarceration of around twenty people, including the president of Wydad of Casablanca, Saïd Neciri, and real estate magnate Abdenbi Bioui. The two men are members of the leadership of the Party of Authenticity and Modernity (PAM), a member of the government coalition.

This is a former deputy designated only by his initials, BM. The latter is the son-in-law of Abdenbi Bioui. According to the same source, BM has set up a logistics and human network in order to transport large quantities of cannabis from production sites in Morocco directly to Algerian territory.

This revelation comes two days after the publication of the annual operational report of the Algerian National People’s Army. According to the Ministry of National Defense, elements of the ANP foiled attempts during 2023 to bring more than 57 tons of processed kif into Algerian territory from Moroccan borders.
