In Tunisia, the question of migration is central. Most of the migrant boats in search of Europe now leave from the coastal towns of the Tunisian coast. Candidates for the European dream who are disillusioned in Tunisia, a land of transit.

From our correspondent in Tunis,

It is a real ordeal experienced by migrants wishing to reach European shores from Tunisia. Fleeing wars – like the Sudanese for example – or even difficult economic situations – like the Ivorians – many of them find themselves in an inextricable situation on the Tunisian territory. And it is all the more painful for them to accept that certain Tunisian ports are only a hundred kilometers from the first Italian islands.

Unwilling or unable to return home so close to their goal, these migrants cannot lead a peaceful existence in Tunisia either. Because the country spares no effort to dissuade them from remaining on national territory, even to the point of tracking them down. This is what happened this summer when hundreds of migrants were deported by entire busloads to deserted and isolated areas, without water or food. The affair caused a lot of noise and scandal on an international scale.
