Mauritania is increasing its pressure on the Algerian government to launch the construction of the Tindouf-Zouerate road. The project was at the center of talks, Monday, December 12 in Algiers, between the Mauritanian Minister of Equipment and Transport, Nani O. Chrougha, and the Algerian Minister of Public Works, Irrigation and Basic Infrastructure, Lakhdar Rakhroukh,  reports media in Nouakchott.

On this occasion, the two parties stressed “the importance of the road project linking Tindouf to Zouerate, because it will allow Algerian operators to access African markets and will also consolidate economic cooperation between the two countries,” the Algerian ministry said in a statement.

As a reminder, Algeria and Mauritania had concluded, in Algiers on December 28, 2021, during the State visit made by President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, a memorandum of understanding for the construction of the said road, 773 km. The neighbor to the east then undertook to fully fund the project, in exchange for a ten-year operating concession. Since then, the execution of the land route has been delayed. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune only signed the decree ratifying the memorandum last March.

Mauritania hopes that the commissioning of the road will contribute to the development of the northern areas of the country.
