The Legal Committee resulting from the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (FDPL) began a three-day meeting on Wednesday April 7 in Tunis. According to Libyan media, this meeting is to discuss the legal framework for the general elections expected in December. A question that divides the Libyans and risks preventing the organization of the elections. Opinions differ on the nature of the constitutional platform that should be adopted.

Libyan parties have yet to come to an agreement on the legal framework necessary to organize the long-awaited elections at the end of the year.

The proposals are numerous and vary between the idea of ​​a completely new Constitution or the adoption of that applied in 1951 during the king’s time. Some are proposing to amend the 2017 Constitution. It has since been frozen due to disagreements. Others are calling for a referendum that is difficult to organize by then.

The meeting of the Legal Committee composed of 17 members from the Political Dialogue Forum aims to make concrete proposals to facilitate the task of the institutions. According to our information, 7 proposals will be sent to the Political Forum.

In his opening speech, Jan Kubis, the UN special envoy to Libya praised the efforts of the members of this committee to achieve “ the objectives of the road plan.” He also indicated that time was running out and that ” the Libyan institutions concerned should define a legal framework as soon as possible “.

The new Libyan executive has pledged to spare no effort in order to succeed in the next elections.

Richard Norland, the US Ambassador to Tripoli, said that in the absence of an agreement in Parliament on the legal basis for the elections, it would be up to the Libyan Political Forum to decide.
