Libyan Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeibeh announced on Sunday the formation of a committee responsible for leading a debate on the drafting of electoral law.

Libya’s prime minister told a ministerial meeting that the committee will include independent figures representing different regions of the country, the national news agency reported.

He added that the committee will conduct a national dialogue on the electoral law and the constitutional basis for the ballot.

Dbeibeh had unveiled, on February 12, a plan to organize elections on June 30, 2022; the presidential and parliamentary polls could not be held on December 24, 2021, due to differences in electoral laws.

The situation worsened in Libya earlier this month after parliament gave its confidence to a new government led by former interior minister Fathi Bashagha, while Dbeibeh refuses to step down as prime minister before the holding of elections.
