Algeria and Libya agreed to work together to resolve issues related to irregular migration and discussed ways of cooperation to secure their common borders.

This is what emerges from the statements broadcast by Algerian national television by the Libyan Minister of Foreign Affairs Najla al-Mangoush and her Algerian counterpart, Sabri Boukadoum, at the end of their meeting this Sunday, at the headquarters of the ministry. Algerian Foreign Minister in Algiers.

“The two sides have agreed to deal with many issues of future importance, relating to trade, security and health, as well as those related to illegal migration, and means of cooperation to secure the borders,” said Al-Mangush.

The head of Libyan diplomacy underlined that Algeria “had also promised to open soon another border post to facilitate the channels of cooperation between the two countries”, without providing further details.

The “Debdeb-Ghadames” border post was closed in 2014 due to the deterioration of the security situation in Libya and has not been reopened very rarely for exceptional entry operations.

“We salute the constant role of Algeria and its tireless efforts to preserve Libyan sovereignty, its territorial integrity as well as its solidarity to achieve national reconciliation”, underlined Al-Mangoush.

And the Libyan Minister of Foreign Affairs indicates that “the reinforcement of the means of bilateral cooperation between our two countries requires to intensify the efforts and to pay more interest to the development of our relations”.

For his part, Boukadoum declared that “Algeria today reaffirms its full support and solidarity with the brotherly Libyan people to overcome this ordeal, and seeks to support the efforts of the Libyan authorities to restore political and security stability and national reconciliation by unifying the institutions, to prepare the ground for the important deadlines (elections) to come ”.

The meeting between Boukadoum and Al-Mangoush comes on the sidelines of a two-day visit to Algiers by Libyan Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibeh, which began on Saturday, at the head of a high-ranking official delegation made up of ministers and officials.

Last April, the Algerian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the security and stability of Libya remained its sole objective, after a visit to Tripoli by Boukadoum accompanied by a high-ranking delegation which included the Minister of the Interior, Kamel Beldjoud.
