Thousands of Moroccans marched again on February 11 in Rabat in support of the Palestinian people, calling for an end to normalization between Morocco and Israel and denouncing a “genocide” in the Gaza Strip. “Normalization is a betrayal”, and “Stop the massacre”, could we read on banners brandished in front of Parliament, in the center of the Moroccan capital, as the war between Israel and Hamas entered its fifth month.

More than 10,000 people marched on the main streets of the city center, some of whom carried a huge Palestinian flag. “We see bombings 24 hours a day, children killed, nearly 30,000 dead and nothing stops, the genocide continues,” lamented Abdelhakim Ziani, a 25-year-old medical student, who wants a break in relations. between Morocco and Israel.

We cannot continue to sell and buy from genocidaires, it is aberrant,” he continued, during the demonstration organized at the call of the Moroccan Front in support of Palestine and against normalization, bringing together left-wing parties and Islamist movements.

Standardization questioned

Since the end of 2020, Morocco has established all-out relations with Israel in return for the recognition by the United States of Morocco’s sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western

Sahara is considered by the UN as a “non-autonomous territory”.

Since the start of the war in Gaza on October 7, several large-scale demonstrations have taken place in Morocco to demand the repeal of normalization, while opposition to this process was until then limited.

The kingdom officially denounced “flagrant violations of the provisions of international law and humanitarian law” by Israel in its reprisals against Hamas, without calling into question the normalization process. The Hamas Ministry of Health announced on February 11 a new toll of 28,176 people killed, mostly women, children, and adolescents, in Gaza since the start of the war.
