Israel-Hamas: The French Press Divided on Morocco’s Position

Morocco’s first reaction condemning attacks against civilians wherever they are after the Hamas operation, expressed in light of its constant support for the Palestinian question and the restoration of its relations with Israel, has been scrutinized since Saturday by the French press.

In France, each newspaper provided its analysis of the position adopted by the Kingdom of Morocco a few hours after the Hamas attack. While some have asserted a certain degree of objectivity and detachment, others have not lacked partiality and intuition.

Le Figaro accuses Morocco

Le Figaro, one of the oldest dailies in the French press, published an article by Georges Malbrunot in which the latter expressly accuses the kingdom of having abandoned the Palestinian question in return for normalization with Israel and recognition of the Moroccan nature of the Sahara.

“Having become the great power of the Arab Middle East after the Arab revolts, Riyadh was probably dissuaded, after the dramatic events of the weekend, from “selling out” the Palestinian cause, as Morocco and the Emirates had done in 2020 by signing the Abraham Accords,” he wrote.

For him, “Except for the United Arab Emirates and Morocco – which normalized their relations in 2020 with the Hebrew State and were content to call for de-escalation – most Arab countries specifically held Israel and its occupation of the Territories Palestinians as responsible for the outbreak of violence.

The industrial tribunal of the JDD and the Causeur

Questioned, yesterday Sunday, by the Journal du Dimanche (JDD) about the repercussions of this new conflict on the Abraham Accords which “involve Israel and Morocco” and the probability of “reshuffling the cards”, the essayist and geopolitologist French Frédéric Encel says that he does not think that “Morocco is renouncing it (the Abraham Accords, Editor’s note)”, explaining that the Moroccan regime “is moderate and also threatened by the Islamists”.

Then, because if “the kingdom has indeed received recognition of sovereignty over Western Sahara from Israel, that of the United States, obtained in 2020, carries much more weight,” he responds, emphasizing that “the axiom diplomatic, strategic and fundamental identity of Morocco, it is this recognition”.

For the Causeur, if the Arab States have adopted different attitudes, those involved in the peace process of the Abraham Accords, notably Morocco or the United Arab Emirates, condemned “unambiguously” while recalling their constant position of “two States » now obsolete.
