Algerians will have to pay a tax on vehicles to travel to Tunisia from next year, the Arabic-language newspaper Echorouk reported on Monday (October 19th). This tax will come into force from the year 2021.

Indeed, the Algerian authorities have decided to impose a tax on Algerians wishing to enter Tunisian territory. According to the Arabic-speaking media, this tax will come into force from the year 2021. Its amount ranges from 2,500 to 10,000 dinars, depending on the category of vehicles.

For example, the tax for a tourist car is fixed at 2,500 dinars. Owners of commercial vehicles and trucks weighing 10 tonnes or less will have to pay 3,000 dinars to be able to access Tunisia with their vehicles. The tax of 10,000 dinars concerns trucks over 10 tons, details the Arabic-language newspaper.

A hard blow for Tunisia

This measure risks causing discontent among Algerian tourists, who are hundreds of visitors to Tunisia each year. This provision is not supposed to please the Tunisian authorities either, although they are not entitled to challenge it.

Indeed, this tax, which will allow an entry of money into the Algerian Treasury, could have a negative impact on Tunisian tourism, which constitutes the most critical sector of the economy of this country. The dissuasive nature of the tax risks reducing the flow of Algerian tourists to Tunisia, which will then take a big hit.

You should know that Algeria is one of the countries which provide the most visitors to Tunisia. “The Algerian market is one of the strategic markets for Tunisian tourism”, admitted the Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Mohamed Ali Toumi, last May.
