The French Embassy in Algeria yesterday condemned a recent video showing a number of French nationals burning the Algerian flag.

In an official statement, the embassy stressed that the act is “unacceptable” and that it may affect the “strong relations” between the two countries.

The video, which has gone viral on social media, dates back to 30 June 2014 and has no connection to the football World Cup which is currently taking place in Russia, the embassy pointed out.

Local authorities have started an investigation into the case “to ensure a fair punishment to the perpetrators.”

The embassy accused the defendants of “damaging others’ property and provoking public racial hatred.”
