Morocco had more arguments than its competitors to host the CAN in two years. Algeria, Zambia, and the Nigeria-Benin duo had thrown in the towel.

To organize the CAN 2025 edition, Morocco competed with Algeria (host of CHAN 2023), Zambia and the Nigeria-Benin duo. The last two were present at the CAF Executive Committee Assembly which was held on Wednesday (09.27.2023) in Cairo, Egypt, to decide on these various issues.

The CAF therefore ruled in favor of the Shereef kingdom on the basis of reports carried out by the German audit firm Roland Berger, mandated by the CAF to audit the candidate countries.

Morocco has the infrastructure

Morocco, which has not hosted the CAN since 1988, has all the necessary infrastructure and in particular stadiums approved by CAF. So it’s time to celebrate for Moroccans who can’t wait to host this continental competition: ” Organizing CAN 2025 is a great opportunity for Moroccans and for Morocco. It will make the country known, that will also make Moroccan football known,” rejoiced Leila Taoussi.

Note that Morocco has also applied to host the Football World Cup in 2030 alongside Portugal and Spain.

Algeria throws in the towel

Algeria, however, had good arguments in terms of infrastructure since it organized the last CHAN African Nations Championship in good conditions last February.

But indeed, Algiers finally withdrew from the race for 2025 and even 2027, officially to concentrate on the development of its national team.

And for the 2027 edition, CAF’s choice fell on the Kenya-Tanzania-Uganda trio. A first in East Africa since the 1976 edition which was held in Ethiopia. “With few exceptions, the CAN must not take place in the same part of Africa,” recalled Patrice Motsepe, president of CAF.
