Fixed internet speed: Tunisia is among the worst countries in the world

Tunisia is in 165th place out of 177 countries in the monthly Speedtest Global Index, published in March 2021. The index measures the speed of fixed broadband internet. The rank attributed to Tunisia remains unchanged compared to a previous nomenclature published in February 2021.

The average speed of the downlink (Download) was estimated at 10.29 megabits per second (Mbps), against a world average of 98 Mbps. Regarding the average speed of the upstream flow (Upload), it was measured at 4.26 Mbps. The fixed broadband speed latency in Tunisia is 55 milliseconds, while the global average stood at 2 milliseconds. The country is at the bottom of the African scale and in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The Speedtest Global Index compares internet speed data from around the world on a monthly basis. The data for the index comes from the hundreds of millions of tests performed by real people every month.

MENA Fixed Broadband Internet Connection Speed

In the MENA region, Israel leads the world with 28th place. The country’s connection speed has been rated at 136.20 Mbps. The United Arab Emirates (29th) is second thanks to an average speed of the downlink (Download) measured at 129.43 Mbps. Kuwait (36th) also reached the podium with a speed of 110.21 Mbps.

Qatar (42nd) is fourth followed by Saudi Arabia (48th) and the Sultanate of Oman (58th). Jordan (63rd) is in seventh place, overtaking the Kingdom of Bahrain (69th) and Egypt (94th). Iraq (110th) closes the TOP 10 of the MENA region.

Next, come Morocco (112th), Iran (132nd), and Palestine (136th). Libya (140th) is in fourteenth place and ahead of Lebanon (148th). Tunisia (165th) is sixteenth and ranks before Syria (168th) and Mauritania (171st).

What about African performances?

In Africa, Ghana (77th) and Côte d’Ivoire (78th) come first, with 47.89 Mbps and 47.77 Mbps respectively. South Africa (88th) is ranked third and reports a better performance than those of Egypt (94th), Senegal (101st), and Seychelles (107th). Morocco (112) is in seventh place on the continent through a gain of five places, compared to the ranking for the month of February. The kingdom precedes the Republic of Congo, Congo-Brazzaville, (116th). Cape Verde (119th) is ninth in Africa followed by Kenya (125th).

Tunisia (165th) does not even appear in the African TOP 20. Indeed, the country occupies 36th place in the African panorama and is positioned after Libya (140th), Nigeria (146th) or even Eswatini (156th), and Burundi (164th).

At the top of the international ranking is Singapore with an estimated speed of 234.40 Mbps, Thailand with 230.59 Mbps, and Hong Kong with 224.73 Mbps. At the other end of the rankings, the countries with the slowest fixed broadband internet speeds are Yemen (175th), Cuba (176th), and Turkmenistan (177th).
