Explosion reported in Manhattan; New York police say one person in custody

The incident occurred early Monday in midtown Manhattan, police say.

 

A suspect who set off an explosion in the New York City subway was taken into custody after the blast Monday morning, according to authorities.

Police said the only person injured in the blast was the suspect, who was described only as a male.

The blast was reported in Midtown Manhattan in the area of the Port Authority Bus Terminal, and police had said they were responding to the explosion at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue.

 A police spokesman said the suspect was injured and did not go into further detail, describing the situation as “very fluid.” The New York Fire Department described the suspect’s injuries as non-life-threatening.

The Port Authority Bus Terminal, which bills itself as the world’s busiest bus terminal, also is not far from Times Square. The incident occurred in the subway, a police spokesman said.

According to the police, three subway lines — the A, C and E — were evacuated as a result of the blast. The New York police’s transit bureau also reported that subway service and travel through the Times Square subway station were being restricted due to the investigation.

President Trump was briefed on the incident Monday, according to the White House, and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) was briefed as well, his officereported.
