EU textile imports: Tunisia and Morocco do better than resist

Textile imports from the EU reached in the first quarter of 2021, a value of 8.6 billion euros, an increase of 10.1% compared to the first quarter of 2020.

According to an analysis by Jean-François Limantour, President of Evalliance, Mediterranean textile suppliers (other than Turkey) occupy a modest place in the competition on the European market. Egypt is the 12th supplier. Tunisia is 13th and Morocco is 18th.

Indeed, these suppliers all show decreases in their exports to Europe with the exception of Tunisia. It is up 16%. This is thanks in particular to the significant sale of masks.

Indeed, the two Mediterranean countries of the Maghreb, Morocco (-8.9%) and Tunisia (-9.2%) do better than resist in a hostile economic environment.

“But beware, these relatively good results only relate to the first three months of the year. They should not make people forget their mediocre performance in 2020”, explains Jean-François Limantour.
