If the moon is sighted today in North Africa, all Maghreb nations, including Algeria, Libya, Lebanon, Egypt and Morocco would celebrate Eid-al-Fitr 2017 tomorrow. Maghreb region, heavily dominated by Muslims, houses more number of Sunnis as compared to Shias. The region embraced Ramadan on May 27, along with Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other Gulf nations.
Algeria, located on northern western font of Africa, would conclude the fast today at 8:11 PM local time. The moon is expected to be sighted around the same period. In Libya, the crescent is expected to be following the sunset at 8:12 PM. In Egypt, the moon would be spotted following the sunset at 7:00 PM, whereas, Morocco expects the moon to be sighted after 7:44 PM. In Lebanon, the crescent sighting expedition would begin after sunset at 7:53 PM.
Eid al-Fitr is the most celebrated festival in North Africa, with over 90 per cent of the population practicing Islam. The holidays would begin from tomorrow if the moon is sighted in the evening.
