Earthquake in Algeria: An Earthquake was Recorded in Algiers on May 4

An earthquake is felt today, Wednesday, May 4, 2022, in the wilaya of Algiers. Find more details on this subject in the following lines. 

An earthquake struck overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday in the north of the country. Indeed, the wilaya of Algiers, in Algeria, was shaken today by an earthquake. The announcement was made this Wednesday, May 4, 2022, by the Center for Research in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Geophysics (GRAAG). 

According to the GRAAG, this is an earthquake of magnitude 3.0 on the open Richter scale. It was recorded this morning around 2:53 a.m. in the Algerian capital. The epicenter of this earthquake is located 12 km northwest of Bordj el Bahri, in the wilaya of Algiers. This is what GRAAG said in a statement posted on its Facebook page. 

In addition, as with every earthquake, the inhabitants of this region have taken to social networks. And this in order to share their feelings. According to the testimonies of Internet users, the earthquake recorded today did not cause any human damage. A report from the Civil Protection services should provide more details on any material damage.  

The shock felt in the capital 

Wednesday’s earthquake was felt mainly by residents of the eastern side of the capital. This more precisely in the commune of Bordj El bahri. In addition, since the beginning of 2022, Algeria has faced numerous earthquakes. They have been registered by the GRAAG in several regions of the country. 

Indeed, in the last three months, Algeria has experienced an earthquake in the wilaya of Médéa of 4.3 on the Richter scale. Then those of Béjaia (5.5) and Biskra (4.2). And finally today’s in Algiers. The Algerian researcher, Loth Bounatiro , explained this phenomenon by a normal seismic activity which appeared lately everywhere in the world.
