The decision taken by Algiers to terminate the Maghreb Europe Gas Pipeline (GME) contract which supplied Spain via Morocco is, in all likelihood, not to the liking of the European Parliament. He called on the Algerian authorities to “reconsider this decision”.

The president of the Delegation of the European Parliament for relations with the Maghreb countries (DMAG) Andrea Cozzolino, did not fail to stress that “the use of gas supply as a means of pressure cannot constitute an appropriate solution”.

The latter therefore called on Algiers to “reconsider this decision and resume the path of dialogue”, believing that the latter has direct consequences not only on Morocco but also on the European Union.

In this sense, he called on the European External Action Service and the European Commission to initiate a diplomatic initiative to encourage the Algerian authorities to review their copy.

However, the Algerian authorities have continued to reassure their European partners by insisting that the shutdown of the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline with a capacity of around 10 billion cubic meters (m3) per year will have no impact on volumes. destined for Spain.

The Algerian party has guaranteed that the increase in production capacity of the Medgaz connecting BéniSaf (Ain Témouchent) to Almeria in Spain, to the tune of 10.5 billion m3 per year before the end of the year, will respond to Spanish demand.
