Bennick also revealed that Nigeria was working on a bid with Benin to host the tournament.

“We are putting together an offer to co-host the tournament with Benin Republic,” Bennick told media on Tuesday.

It is time for Nigeria to host an international tournament as there are many benefits associated with hosting such competitions.

“Many countries are candidates for the competition; we are confident to get CAF approval.

Since the start of the Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria has hosted two events.

The first time was in 1980 when the Green Eagles led by Ota Gloria silenced Algeria 3-0 in the final held at the Lagos National Stadium where legend Segun Odegbami scored a brace.

The second time was in 2000 when the country hosted Ghana after Zimbabwe were replaced by CAF for failing to meet tournament specifications.

This time, the Super Eagles reached the final again but lost 4-3 on penalties to Cameroon after the match ended 2-2 after extra time.

However, CAF has not made any official statement regarding possible replacements as hosts of the continental tournament.

If CAF accepts its hosting rights, it will be the first time that Benin will host the rest of Africa.
