The French food distributor Auchan, already present in Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire, announced on Monday that it wanted to open a first store in Algeria in the fourth quarter of 2023, which will be managed by the local group Great Way, before a possible development “through the country. 

Before the end of the year, an Auchan-branded hypermarket will open its doors in Algiers over an area of ​​5,000 square meters, Auchan said in a joint press release with Great Way, which already operates in Algeria. world-renowned in the textile & sports sectors.

This group brings to the project its perfect knowledge of the country and of the sector, further indicating Auchan according to which further development across the country is already envisaged. Auchan and Great Way also intend to promote the creation of local and responsible agricultural sectors, and the establishment of Auchan in Algeria will promote the development of the country’s agri-food industry, according to the press release signed by the two entities.

Algeria became the 14th country in which Auchan is established in the world, and the 3rd in Africa after Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire. In Senegal, where the brand of northern origin has been present since 2015, it has 37 stores as well as a merchant site coupled with a drive and a home delivery service.

In Côte d’Ivoire, where Auchan arrived in June 2022, it has 13 points of sale in Abidjan and Bouaké, as well as a delivery service in particular. The group made headlines in 2022 by refusing to leave Russia despite pressure to do so from the Ukrainian government, which accused it of financing the Russian war effort.
