Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is hospitalized again in Germany for post-Covid complications, the presidency announced on Sunday. The 75-year-old head of state contracted the coronavirus at the end of October, and returned to Algeria less than two weeks ago.

Two months after a first hospitalization in Germany due to Covid-19, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, 75, is again hospitalized there for post-Covid complications in the foot, announced on Sunday January 10, the presidency.

The president left the Boufarik military base, near Algiers, where he was greeted by senior state officials before flying to Berlin, Algerian national television said.

The head of state returned to Algeria less than two weeks ago, apparently in good health. He then spoke briefly to wish “a happy new year to all Algerians”, “much better than 2020”.

From October 24, the president, a heavy smoker, had voluntarily put himself in isolation after having been in contact with officials contaminated by Covid-19.

He was then admitted for two months, on October 28, in “one of the largest specialized establishments” in Germany after contracting the virus. His prolonged absence had fueled rumors and disinformation in Algeria.

Non-urgent care

National television broadcast images of the Algerian president in the lounge of honor at Boufarik military airport, near Algiers, where he was greeted by senior state officials before flying to Berlin.

According to television, Abdelmadjid Tebboune was to undergo these foot treatments before his return to Algeria, but as they were not of an urgent nature, they had been postponed due to the president’s commitments related to the treatment of certain “urgent cases” .

The head of state had to return to Algiers in order to sign the 2021 finance law before December 31 and to promulgate the revision of the Constitution adopted by referendum on November 1.
