The Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, replaces his Prime Minister and appoints Ennadir Larbaoui, an experienced diplomat and current chief of staff of the presidency, to this post, one year before the presidential election, announces the presidency.

Mr. Tebboune ” appointed Mr. Ennadir Larbaoui, Prime Minister, to replace Mr. Aïmene Benabderrahmane “, who was dismissed from his position, the presidency said in a press release. The appointment of Ennadir Larbaoui, 74, a loyal supporter of the head of state, comes almost a year before the presidential election scheduled for December 2024. President Tebboune, 77, has not yet announced whether or not he will run for a second term.

A change already in the air

The reasons for the dismissal of Aïmene Benabderrahmane, in office since June 2021, were not specified but, according to the Interlignes information site “ a change in the executive had been in the air for a while already ”. Before being appointed chief of staff to President Tebboune in March 2023, Ennadir Larbaoui followed a long diplomatic career during which he was notably Algeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations and ambassador on several occasions.

According to the TSA (All About Algeria) website, this change comes “after several criticisms ” publicly expressed by President Tebboune on ” the management of tensions linked to the availability of food products and the implementation of certain presidential decisions”.

Another telling sign that the president was not satisfied with the action of the executive, a month ago, he ordered the reorganization of the presidential services by appointing several advisers to whom he had entrusted in particular the task of ” monitoring and participating in the implementation of the program, orientations, and decisions of the president “. These advisors were responsible for “ monitoring government activities ” as well as all “ economic, political, institutional and diplomatic issues”.
