The work of the 1st session of the Bilateral Commission for the Promotion and Development of the Algerian-Tunisian Border Regions began on Monday in Algiers to define a common approach to the development of these regions.

The opening of the work of this two-day session was co-chaired by the Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities and Regional Planning, Brahim Merad, and his Tunisian counterpart, Kamel Feki, with the participation of the walis of border wilayas of the two countries and the director general of the Algerian Agency for International Cooperation for Solidarity and Development (AACISD), Abed Halouz, and representatives of the sectors concerned with the development of the border regions.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the development of the Algerian-Tunisian border regions is “a strategic objective”, capable of strengthening economic development and relaunching vital projects in these regions, in materializing the results of the visit of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Tunisia in December 2021, crowned by the “Carthage Declaration”.

This session will discuss several areas, including ways to promote and develop trade between the border wilayas of the two countries, to improve their attractiveness to strengthen the role of border crossings in development, and to establish a common strategy to combat major risks.
