Algeria suspends security around French Embassy and Consulates

The Algerian authorities have suspended the security provision at the French Embassy in Algiers and Consulates around the country. French cultural centres and schools will continue to be protected, however.

Informed sources told Echorouk El-Yawmi that the measures came into force on Wednesday. Algerian police officers have guaranteed the security coverage for foreign diplomatic stations since the 1990s. Their removal is, apparently, a response to the cancellation of similar protection by the French authorities for the Algerian Ambassador’s residence in Paris.

According to available information, Paris has also abolished security protection for a number of diplomatic buildings, including those of the United States of America.
