Algeria: Soon an American University in Algiers

In Algeria, the USA is committed to supporting initiatives aimed at making the introduction of the English language a reality in the education system. This commitment has resulted in the training of trainers, the granting of scholarships and soon the training of students.   

The United States will soon open a branch of the American University in Algiers, the capital of Algeria. The information was revealed during a meeting held on Wednesday, March 15 between the Algerian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamel Baddari (photo, right), and the United States Ambassador to America in Algeria, Mrs. Elizabeth Moore Aubin (photo, left).

The university set up at the request of the Algerian authorities will, among other things, have the mission of increasing the density of training offered in English in Algeria. “During this meeting, the minister expressed the Algerian side’s desire to deepen this cooperation by creating a branch of the American university in Algeria,” the statement from the Algerian ministry indicates.

The installation of the university should come to intensify the relations between the two countries in the field of higher education. Area in which country of Uncle Sam has invested in Algeria, particularly in the project to introduce the English language into the education system. One of the latest collaborations was the implementation of an English language learning platform for Algerian university teachers by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) last January.

In addition, the Algerian side has also expressed its eagerness to see many cooperation agreements between the universities of the two countries. “He [Kamal Badari, Editor’s note] called for the acceleration of the signing of twinning agreements between Algerian universities and their American counterparts, as well as to encourage the mobility of professors, researchers and doctoral students in the two countries”,  adds the press release.
