Oil refineries in Algeria play an important role in meeting the local market’s needs for oil derivatives, as the country succeeded in stopping imports for the third consecutive year.

According to updated data from OPEC, the Algerian oil giant, Sonatrach, confirms its success for the third consecutive year in stopping the import of oil derivatives during the period from January to the end of May this year, with the capacity oil refineries in Algeria to meet the needs of the local market.

The country has managed to increase its production of oil derivatives, despite the stability of oil refinery capacity in Algeria over the past year (2022), at the same level recorded in 2021, according to OPEC.

Total oil refinery capacity in Algeria stabilized at 677,000 barrels per day over the past year, the same level recorded since 2020, compared to 657,000 barrels per day in 2019.

On the other hand, the production of oil refineries in Algeria increased by 4% on an annual basis, reaching 669 thousand barrels per day during the past year.

According to OPEC data, there are 6 oil refineries in Algeria, including that of Skikda, which has the largest refining capacity, around 355,000 barrels per day.

Annual data from OPEC shows that the production of oil derivatives in Algeria has increased to 644,000 barrels per day over the past year, compared to 621,000 barrels in 2021 and around 614,000 barrels per day in 2020.

Despite the increase achieved last year, the production of petroleum derivatives in the country did not reach the level recorded in 2019, amounting to 660,000 barrels per day, in a context of stability in the capacity of the refineries of oil in Algeria.

Algeria’s gasoline production has stabilized over the past year at 74,000 barrels per day, while its kerosene production has increased to 22,000 barrels per day, from 19,000 barrels in 2021, according to figures from OPEC.

The country’s distillate production also stabilized at 211,000 barrels per day, while heavy fuel oil production increased to 110,000 barrels per day, in addition to other petroleum products with a volume of 226,000 barrels per day. .

Domestic consumption

Algeria intends to invest around 30 billion dollars in the exploration and production of hydrocarbons during the period from 2023 to 2027, with the aim of ensuring the country’s energy security and exporting abroad.

According to Algerian government data, domestic fuel consumption has increased over the past year to 129 million barrels, with forecasts that consumption will continue to increase at an annual rate of 22 million barrels, for reach 299 million barrels in 2050.

Algerian diesel consumption increased over the past year to reach 74.03 million barrels, against an annual production capacity of 65.97 million barrels.

Algeria expects its diesel production capacity by 2030 to reach 91.62 million barrels, with the implementation of expansions at the Skikda refinery that will increase diesel production capacity by 29.32 million barrels. barrels.

In terms of liquefied petroleum gas consumption, it rose to 10.99 million barrels over the past year, from 8.79 million barrels in 2021.

On the contrary, domestic gasoline consumption has declined over the past year to 24.18 million barrels from around 24.92 million barrels in 2021.

As for Algerian jet fuel consumption, it has increased over the past year to reach 3.43 million barrels, compared to a volume of 2.177 million barrels in 2021.
