This Monday, April 12, Algeria launched a commercial maritime line to Mauritania, connecting Algiers to Nouakchott in just five days, reports the daily El Khabar . Algerian exporters hope that the new junction will be a first step in facilitating access to the Malian and Senegalese markets. The Boukadoum department is in fact betting on Africa to revive the Algerian economy and recover the political ground lost in recent years.

This opening comes as relations between the two neighboring countries are going through a period of warming. Thus, the Algerian Minister of the Interior visited the Mauritanian capital on April 1. A visit marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding to create a border commission. Three days later, it was Mauritania’s head of diplomacy who made a trip to Algiers, carrying a message from President Mohamed Cheikh Ould El Ghazouani to Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

As a reminder, in August 2018, Algeria and Mauritania inaugurated the Tindouf-Zouerate border crossing.
