Algeria is one of the main players in gas production in Africa. Exporter of LNG to many European countries, the largest country in Africa has not failed to express its desire to improve its gas production and expand the scope of its export.

The year 2023 recorded Algeria’s success in gas production and export. With an annual production estimated at 130 billion m3, of which 50 m3 is dedicated to the internal market, Algeria is the African leader in natural gas exports. Turkey, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, and many others, are turning to the North African country for gas supply, particularly LNG.

Following in the footsteps of the year that has just passed, the year 2024 looks promising for Algeria, which intends to improve its gas production and achieve new figures on a global scale. Its strategy consists of the exploration and exploitation of new production fields while improving existing fields.

Soon the establishment of new gas fields in Algeria

One of the most important deposits in Algerian territory, the Hassi Ba Hamou field, is located in the wilaya of Timimoune, with a production capacity planned for 2026 of 6 million cubic meters per day. In the wake of its development operations, the regions of the extreme south have seen numerous projects. The Tinerkouk deposit has a production capacity of 40 million m3 per day.

In order to establish itself through its gas supply capacity, Algeria is considering the establishment in the short term of new fields, namely that of Ahnet in Adrar, planned for the year 2025, and the HTJ project. Without forgetting the establishment of a network of more than 24 wells for gas collection.

In order to strengthen trade ties with other countries, cooperation with foreign energy companies is already being implemented. Sonatrach, with the French company Total Energies, is currently developing the Issouane deposit, in the Illizi region. For its part, the partnership with the Russian group Gazprom aims to produce 2 million m3 of gas, from the Assel field, in Ouargla.

Algeria: towards the export of 20% additional gas for Italy

Algeria’s commitment to gas production is a proven fact. The country’s policy, voluntarily aimed at reducing oil production, is offset by its increasing production of gas products. By the end of 2024, Algeria will have to increase its exports by 20% to Italy.

It is important to remember that Algeria recently signed new agreements with the United Kingdom to strengthen its export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and that in 2023, Algeria will regain its place as the leading gas exporting country. to Spain, while tripling prices.
