Algeria : Eight ministers, candidates in 4 May legislative elections

ALGIERS –Eight ministers, members of the party would be running for the legislative office in the 4 May elections, General Secretary of the National Liberation Front (FLN) party Djamel Ould Abbes announced Monday in Algiers.

Ould Abbes told a news conference following the installation of the FLN party national commission in charge of the study of candidature files that “eight ministers of the current government who also assume senior positions at the party” are running for legislative offices in their provinces.”

The FLN chief said that the number “is set to increase in the coming days.”

The candidate ministers are Minister of Transport and Public Works Boudjemaa Talai, Minister of Health, Population and Hospital Reform Abdelmalek Boudiaf, Minister of Relations with the parliament Ghania Eddalia, Minister of Town Planning, Tourism and Craft Industry Abdelouahab Nouri, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries Abdeslam Chelghoum, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Tahar Hadjar, Minister of Water Resources and Environment Abdelkader Ouali and Deputy Minister to the Minister of National Planning, Tourism and Craft Industry, in charge of Craft Industry Aicha Tagabou.

Concerning the rumours around the candidature of Prime Minister in Algiers, Ould Abbes said that  “Sellal has not submitted his candidature yet, and he will be welcome if he wants to stand on the list of FLN.”

The “senior position assumed by the Premier is related to the country’s supreme authority embodied by President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika,” he added.

Ould Abbes said the FLN party recorded so far “6 228 candidates in 48 provinces.”
