Algeria: “Closing the Borders Is No Longer on the Agenda”

The Algerian borders have been partially open for eight months. Since June 1, international commercial flights have been authorized to and from Algeria.

The program has been gradually enriched to currently have around 110 flights per week with 13 countries. Since the end of October, sea crossings have been made with Spain and France.

This month of January was marked by the addition of two new countries, Switzerland and Egypt, to the list of destinations served by international flights. It was also marked by an increase in flights with Tunisia. From now on, two daily return flights are operated between Algiers and Tunis, by Air Algérie and Tunisair.

Closure of Algerian borders: new rumors

But since the reopening of the borders, the Algerians live in the anguish of a new closure, as happened in February 2021 after the appearance of the Delta variant.

Currently, the increase in contamination linked to the Omicron variant raises fears of a similar scenario. On social networks, recurring rumors announce a reduction in the number of flights and the closing of borders.

Algerian borders: the answers of Pr Mehyaoui

Rumors were denied by Pr Riyad Mehyaoui, this Monday, January 31. The member of the scientific committee affirmed that no closure measure is envisaged. In an interview with the TSA – Tout Sur Algérie news site, Professor Mehyaoui goes even further by definitively excluding such a measure in the future.

“Any return to confinements and the closing of borders is no longer on the agenda. It is no longer a question because the virus is circulating everywhere else in the world, ”he explains.

On the other hand, it is excluded to abandon health measures to control travelers entering Algeria. “The health system at the borders is maintained and reinforced,” he said.
