An official source at the United Nations indicated that the special envoy of the secretary general for the Moroccan Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, will visit Mauritania next Saturday.

A statement issued by the Office of the Secretary General of the United Nations indicates that “De Mistura traveled to Algeria on Monday to meet with Algerian government officials, and he expects to travel to Nouakchott to meet with Mauritanian authorities on September 10.”

The UN envoy had already visited Rabat last July and had met Moroccan officials as part of his mission to activate the process of political settlement of the artificial conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.

The Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Staffan de Mistura, concluded a visit to Tindouf, Algeria, where the Polisario Front resides, and held a meeting with its leader, Brahim Ghali, and a number of leaders.

During this two-day visit, the UN envoy to Tindouf met Khatiri Addouh, presented by the Polisario, as head of the negotiation delegation, as well as a member of the Front’s secretariat, Fatima Mahdi, and the coordinator with the MINURSO mission, Sidi Mohamed Ammar. On Sunday, he met the leader of the separatist front, Brahim Ghali.

This is the second visit of Staffan de Mistura since his appointment, and after Algiers and Tindouf, he should go to Nouakchott, which is also the fourth part of this conflict, as it was confirmed by the United Nations when the he former emissary, Horst Koehler, brought together all the parties to the conflict around the same table in Geneva.
