Algeria: Workers’ Party rectifiers dismiss Louisa Hanoune

The leaders of the recovery movement targeting the Workers’ Party, denounced by the president of the party, Louisa Hanoune a few days ago, took action on Saturday, April 3. They held a congress at the Mazafron hotel in Algiers.

As was to be expected, the first decision these rectifiers took was the removal of Louisa Hanoune from the head of this political formation. They then placed a new interim secretary-general.

And it is the former deputy of the wilaya of Skikda, Mounir Nasri, who was appointed to this post. In a speech given on the occasion, the new acting SG said that this action was by no means “a recovery movement” that would target people. For him and his peers, it is a movement aimed at revitalizing the PT, in order to allow it to regain its place on the Algerian political scene. The speaker believed that the Workers’ Party had lost ground on the stage for some time.

It is clear, however, that this decision will not be to the liking of Louisa Hanoune and the party leadership. A few days ago, the boss of the PT stepped up to denounce manoeuvres against the PT. For her, this is a “conspiracy” that targets her party in relation to its political positions, in particular those relating to the rejection of the legislative election, scheduled for June 12.

What will Louisa Hanoune do?

In addition, the leader of the Workers’ Party said she had sent a letter to the wali of Algiers. She explained to him that the Interior Ministry had already validated the composition of the national leadership, political bureau and central committee. Louisa Hanoune also specified that any exploitation of the name of her party by anyone outside her leadership should be considered a crime.

Finally, Louisa Hanoune is committed to defending her party and the decision-making autonomy in force within it. In this sense, she said that she would go to court in order to counter the action of the people concerned.
