From year to year, the Kingdom of Morocco is positioned on the Spanish food market as one of the main suppliers.

According to INFORMA’s DBK Sector Observatory, Morocco was the source of 46% of Spanish vegetable imports and 20% of fruit imports. Moreover, Spanish purchases in 2022 reached 3.5 billion euros. Up nearly 13% compared to 2021.

For example, Morocco has increased its sweet potato exports to Europe and the Middle East by an average of 67% in recent years. In 2017, Moroccan farmers only exported 90 tons of sweet potatoes before peaking in 2022 at a record 1,200 tons. A performance to be taken into consideration, especially if we remember that ten years ago, the slider of Moroccan exports of sweet potatoes was literally pointing to zero.

Another example shows the dynamism of the Moroccan agricultural sector internationally. These are Moroccan carrot exports, the volume of which multiplied by 1.2 in 2022. Morocco’s carrot exports have increased annually by 46% since 2017 and reached a record 43,000 tonnes in 2022. Morocco also started the year 2023 with a record 2,700 tonnes of carrot exports, an increase of 80% compared to January last year.

Moroccan carrot exports are mainly concentrated in sub-Saharan African countries, while exports to the EU remain minor and continue to decline.
