The man in his 30s, whom officials declined to identify, apparently committed suicide after escaping from the site of Monday’s attack in Switzerland.
GENEVA — A gunman who wounded three people attending prayers after opening fire at an Islamic center in Zurich has been found dead, apparently after committing suicide, the Swiss police said on Tuesday.
“Our investigation says the dead man is the shooter,” Peat Jost, a spokesman for the Zurich police, said by telephone.
Mr. Jost declined to identify the gunman, who the police said was in his 30s, but he said investigators believed he had killed himself.
On Monday, in the hours after the attack, the police found the body of a man on the Gassner Bridge, near the city center and not far from the Islamic center, but did not immediately link him to the shooting.
Witnesses to the attack reported that the gunman, dressed in dark clothes and a woolen cap, had escaped on foot after the shooting, which left two people seriously wounded. The police in Zurich, the largest city in Switzerland, used tracker dog units to hunt the gunman.
The shooting came as Germany was reeling from an attack on Monday in Berlin, where a truck rammed into a Christmas market and killed 12 people. Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday that the assault was a terrorist attack.
The police have not identified a motive for the attack on the Islamic center, which was largely frequented by members of the Somali community in Zurich. The results of the investigation were scheduled to be released at a news conference later on Tuesday, the police said.
