Algeria Reiterates Its Support for Cuba’s Fight for the Lifting of Sanctions

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Thursday reiterated Algeria’s “permanent solidarity” with Cuba in the latter’s struggle to lift the sanctions imposed on it for more than six decades.

Melbourne made the remarks to the press after his meeting with the Cuban President visiting Algiers, Miguel Diaz-Canel, during which they discussed bilateral cooperation as well as regional and international issues.

“The two nations share historic relations of friendship and solidarity marked by the values ​​of freedom, peace, and justice,” the Algerian president said.

He reiterated Algeria’s “permanent solidarity with the Cuban people”, who are striving to lift the economic, financial, and commercial blockade imposed on their country for more than 60 years, “on the basis of our faith in the principles and the purposes of the United Nations and the resolution of the General Assembly resolution calling for the lifting of the embargo on Cuba.

Melbourne said that Algeria has decided “to lighten the burden on the Cuban economy by canceling all interest rates on Cuba’s debts to Algeria and by postponing their payment”.

Algeria “will also grant a solar power plant and resume the supply of hydrocarbons to Cuba in order to allow it to restart the stopped plants”, he added.

For his part, President Diaz-Canel declared that “Algeria and Cuba constitute a model to follow in terms of bilateral relations of friendship, solidarity and mutual support since 1963 when Cuba sent a medical team to bring aid to the brotherly Algerian people”.

He said his visit, which coincides with the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, is of “great significance”.
