Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune gave his government, meeting on June 19, 2022, guidelines and instructions relating to education. Among them, is the adoption of the English language from the primary cycle.

This decision, according to a press release from the Council of Ministers, follows “an in-depth study carried out by experts and specialists”.

Furthermore, indicates the same source, President Tebboune “reiterated his determination to review the text of the law governing the teaching profession, in the application of his commitments in terms of reforming the education system”, and emphasized “the need to revise the educational programs by referring to the pedagogical spirit, which has allowed the formation, since independence, of an elite in various specialties”.

Until then, English was only taught in college, which constitutes the secondary cycle. While Arabic is the language of instruction in the primary cycle, French and Tamazight are also taught from this cycle in certain regions of the country.
