The Parisian magazine, Jeune Afrique, has unveiled the 2024 edition of its annual ranking of the 500 champions of the African economy. This is a list that once again distinguishes the Algerian oil group Sonatrach in the first position.

Furthermore, the new edition of this ranking highlights the entry into the ranking of the national airline company, Air Algérie, which takes the 10th position of the Algerian companies present in this selection.

Air Algérie arrives at 343rd place in the Jeune Afrique rankings

Furthermore, on the African scale, the national air carrier occupies a contrasting position and comes in 343rd place in this list. This result proves that Air Algérie still has a long way to go and work to undertake to align itself with the leaders of the airline sector in Africa.

Indeed, with a turnover of 394 million dollars, it makes significantly less than its African counterparts. In particular, Ethiopian Airlines which takes the lead in this air sector ranking, with a turnover of 6.1 billion dollars, and Egyptair which is positioned in 2nd place with 1.7 billion dollars. Royal Air Maroc comes in third place on the airline podium with a turnover of 1.1 billion dollars.

Since the last edition of the #500Africanchampions, 60 new CEOs have been named among the winners of our ranking.

Some have inherited rather favorable conditions, but will they be able to maintain the trajectory of their business?

The entry of Air Algérie into this top 500 certainly illustrates a notable advance for the company, which was absent during previous editions. Furthermore, this ranking also represents the fruit of a restructuring plan initiated several years ago which allowed the national airline to return to a financial surplus in 2022, after having experienced a deficit for seven long years. It is important to emphasize that Air Algérie is the only Algerian company, operating in the transport sector, to appear in this ranking.
