Three Algerian truckers were injured when their vehicles were attacked by armed men. According to details from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the attack took place in Gao, in northern Mali, where terrorist groups are active.
“Three Algerian truck drivers, engaged by an Algerian company in the transport of goods between Algeria and Mali, were injured during an attack, which occurred at two o’clock in the morning on the night of July 8, on the outskirts of the city of Gao, in the north of Mali”, announced, this Saturday, July 9, 2022, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a press release.
“A group of four individuals traveling on motorbikes, armed with Kalashnikovs, attacked Algerian nationals in a camp used by truckers to rest”, added the Algerian diplomacy, specifying that “the attackers had demanded money from the truckers. Not having won their case, they resorted to the use of their firearms”.
The Algerian authorities denounce a “criminal act” imputed by the inhabitants of Gao “to the criminal gangs active in this region of Mali. The injured were evacuated to Gao hospital where they were taken care of, while the Algerian embassy in Bamako is closely monitoring the situation of these nationals”. The attack has not yet been claimed.
This assault is reminiscent of that of September 11, 2021, launched against Moroccan conveyors, still in Mali. Except that last year’s attack was deadly, claiming the lives of two truck drivers. The day after the attack, voices were also raised in Morocco to accuse the Algerian authorities and the Polisario Front. But Algiers had released all its responsibility.
