Western Sahara: Gulf monarchies line up behind Morocco

The Gulf monarchies openly gave their support to the Kingdom of Morocco which launched a military operation on Friday, November 13, in the region of El Guerguerat in Western Sahara.

Barely a few hours after the Moroccan military operation, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Jordan or even Oman, all gave their support to Morocco.

Qatar’s foreign ministry said on Twitter that it supported the military operation of “brother” Morocco at the El Guerguerat border crossing.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry indicated that the kingdom “supports the measures taken by the brother Kingdom of Morocco to establish freedom of civil and commercial movement in the buffer zone of Guerguerat, in the Moroccan Sahara”, reported the official agency SPA.

For its part, the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said: “The Kingdom of Jordan stands alongside the brother kingdom of Morocco in all the steps it takes to protect its national interests, its territorial integrity, and its security.”

Saudi Arabia and Jordan have justified their unconditional support for Morocco by the fact that it would be, according to them, what they qualify as “dangerous provocations by the Polisario militia”.

In a statement, Bahrain has reduced the Saharawi army to “militias” Oman has turned Morocco into a victim and the United Arab Emirates is projecting itself into the future by showing its support for all the next actions that Morocco may undertake.

Algeria deplores “serious violations” of the ceasefire in El Guerguerat

In the early hours of dawn on Friday, Morocco carried out military aggression in the buffer zone of El-Guerguerat by opening three new illegal breaches in violation of the ceasefire agreement.

During the same day, Algeria reacted by “strongly” deploring the “serious violations” of the ceasefire recorded on Friday in the area of ​​El Guerguerat in the southwest of Western Sahara.

“Algeria deeply deplores the serious violations of the ceasefire recorded this morning in the El Guerguerat area in Western Sahara. It calls for the immediate cessation of these military operations, the consequences of which are likely to affect the stability of the whole region ”, underlined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release.

“Algeria calls on the two parties, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front, to show a sense of responsibility and restraint, and to respect, in its entirety, the N1 Military Agreement, signed between them and the UN, ”the ministry added.

In the same press release, Algeria declared “to await”, “in particular, from the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Minurso, the scrupulous accomplishment of their missions, without restrictions or obstacles, and with the impartiality required. current developments ”.

And “reiterates” its appeal to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, with a view to the appointment, as soon as possible, of a personal envoy and the effective resumption of political talks, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the Council of Security, the UN General Assembly and the Charter Principles.

Ghali announces the end of the ceasefire commitment

The next day (Saturday), the Saharawi President, Brahim Ghali, officially announced in a presidential decree, the end of the ceasefire commitment signed between the Polisario Front and the Kingdom of Morocco in 1991, following Moroccan aggression in the region of El-Guerguerat, reported the Sahrawi Press Agency (SPS).

President Ghali, Supreme Chief of the Armed Forces, indicated that this decision was taken “after the Kingdom of Morocco violated the ceasefire agreement by attacking, on November 13, 2020, civilians who were demonstrating peacefully in front of the illegal breach of El-Guerguerat, and opening three other breaches in the Moroccan military wall in flagrant violation of military agreement No. 1 signed between the Polisario Front and the Kingdom of Morocco, under the supervision of the United Nations ”.

“In the application of Security Council resolution 690 of 1991 to organize a referendum of self-determination of the Saharawi people, and on the basis of the decisions of the extraordinary session of the National Secretariat held on 07/11/2020, and on the basis of powers conferred on him by the Basic Law of the Polisario Front, and the constitution of the SADR, Brahim Ghali, Secretary-General of the Front and President of the Republic, signed a presidential decree on November 13, 2020, according to which he announces the end of the commitment to the ceasefire that the Moroccan occupation had torpedoed ”, underlined the decree.

The decree ordered the commander of the General Staff of the Sahrawi People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) to “take all measures related to the implementation of the requirements of this decree in the jurisdiction which belongs to it, and also ordered the National Security Authority, headed by the Prime Minister, to take measures related to the implementation of the demands of the state of war with regard to the management and administration of national institutions and bodies and to guarantee the regularity of services ”.
